Most people searching for an "AI personal trainer app" want one thing: a plan that keeps working when life does not go to plan. Here is what these apps actually do, and where each type falls short. 1. Rule-based programming. The app asks about your goal, experience and available equipment, then builds a progression from established training rules — progressive overload, sensible volume, planned deload weeks. The app reads sleep, resting heart rate or a recovery score from a watch and raises or lowers the day's work. Useful when the data is consistent. Less useful when your watch is charging half the week. 3. AI chat and interpretation. A language model answers questions, explains a substitution, or turns your logged sets and a meal photo into feedback. This is where "AI" genuinely adds something: it handles the messy, one-off questions a fixed app cannot. Most apps are one of these dressed up as all three.
