So today, we're diving into something super important for anyone trying to build muscle, recover better, or just, you know, optimize their fitness. We're talking about the leucine threshold. Ooh, a classic! Yeah, it's one of those foundational concepts, but I think a lot of people still don't quite get *why* it's so important. Exactly. Because when we talk about protein, everyone's like, 'Eat protein!' But it's not just about total protein, right? It's about *what* kind of protein and how much of certain amino acids. Totally. Think of leucine as like the key that unlocks the muscle-building factory. You need a certain amount of that key to really get the machinery going. The key to the muscle-building factory. I like that! So, for the uninitiated, what exactly *is* muscle protein synthesis, or MPS, and why do we care about leucine for it? So, MPS is just the scientific term for your body building new muscle proteins. It's happening all the time, your muscles are constantly breaking down and rebuilding. For muscle growth—hypertrophy—you need to build more than you break down, consistently. Right, the net positive balance thing. Exactly. And leucine, which is one of the branched-chain amino acids, or BCAAs, it's kind of like the signal. When your body detects enough leucine, it basically says, 'Okay, time to turn on the building switch!' So it's not just a building block, it's also a messenger? Precisely! It directly activates a pathway called mTOR, mammalian target of rapamycin. That's the master regulator for cell growth and protein synthesis. No leucine, no mTOR activation, no maximal MPS. Mammalian target of rapamycin. Okay, nerdy, I like it. So this 'leucine threshold' then is the *minimum* amount you need to hit to get that switch flipped? Yep, you got it. And the science generally points to about 2 to 3 grams of leucine per meal as that sweet spot for most people to maximally stimulate MPS. Two to three grams of *leucine* specifically, not just two to three grams of protein. Crucial distinction! A lot of protein sources are great, but some have more leucine concentrated in them than others. Like, whey protein is super high in leucine, which is why it's so popular post-workout. Ah, that makes sense. I always just thought, 'protein good,' you know? (chuckles) Well, it *is* good! But understanding the nuances helps you be more effective. If you're having, say, a tiny bit of protein that's low in leucine, you might not be hitting that threshold, even if you feel like you're 'eating protein.' So, if I'm a 70-kilo person, what does that actually look like in terms of leucine intake per meal? Good question. For a 70kg person, we're talking roughly 2.8 to 7 grams of leucine per meal. So that 2-3g recommendation is a good baseline, but aiming for a bit higher, maybe 2.5-4 grams, especially if you're really pushing hard in the gym, gives you a nice buffer. Okay, so like, a decent-sized chicken breast, or a scoop of quality whey protein, you're probably in that range? Spot on. A typical scoop of whey can have around 2.5 to 3 grams of leucine. A 4-5 ounce chicken breast is usually in that ballpark too. Things like eggs, yogurt, beef... they're all great sources. What about just taking BCAA supplements then? If leucine is the key, why not just pop a leucine pill? That's a common thought! And while leucine is the primary trigger, you still need all the *other* essential amino acids to *build* the actual muscle protein.
