It serves as an invaluable tool for both trainers and athletes seeking to refine physical capabilities. The FMS comprises seven distinct movement patterns, each designed to challenge the body's stability and mobility. Crucially, these tests do not evaluate strength or endurance; rather, they observe the efficiency and symmetry of movement. The objective is to pinpoint limitations and identify asymmetries between the left and right sides of the body, which can predispose individuals to compensatory movement strategies and potential injury. Organizations like the National Academy of Sports Medicine emphasize the critical role of such screens in establishing individual baselines and informing corrective strategies. Research consistently demonstrates that identifying and addressing movement asymmetries can substantially reduce the incidence of non-contact injuries, particularly within athletic populations where dynamic, high-impact movements are common. Poor movement quality, often originating from restricted mobility, insufficient stability, or muscular imbalances, carries significant implications. It elevates injury risk by forcing the body into compensatory patterns that overstress joints and connective tissues. Concurrently, it diminishes performance, as inefficient movement wastes metabolic energy, thereby reducing force production, speed, and sustained effort. The FMS battery systematically assesses key functional movements. The Deep Squat evaluates bilateral, full-range squatting mechanics, requiring integrated mobility of the hips, knees, ankles, and thoracic spine. The Hurdle Step assesses step mechanics, demanding single-leg stability and hip mobility. The In-Line Lunge tests dynamic balance and hip/ankle mobility within a reciprocal pattern. Further assessments include Shoulder Mobility, which evaluates bilateral shoulder range of motion, particularly internal rotation and adduction, crucial for overhead activities. The Active Straight-Leg Raise measures hamstring and gastrocnemius flexibility alongside core stability.
