This process typically initiates with gentle range-of-motion drills and systematically advances toward more demanding strengthening and functional movements. The initiation timeline for post-surgical exercise varies considerably based on the specific surgical intervention, such as ACL reconstruction, meniscal repair, or total knee arthroplasty, and the individual patient's healing trajectory. Generally, very gentle range-of-motion exercises can commence within the initial 24 to 72 hours post-operation, contingent upon surgeon approval. Strengthening protocols typically begin within the first few weeks, progressing under the direct supervision of a physical therapist. The overarching objectives of a post-surgical knee rehabilitation program are multifaceted. These include restoring full flexion and extension without pain, effectively mitigating post-operative edema and algia, and rebuilding the strength of the quadriceps, hamstrings, gluteals, and gastrocnemius muscles. Furthermore, enhancing proprioception and balance is critical for preventing re-injury and facilitating the safe return to functional activities. Early-stage rehabilitation, generally encompassing the first four weeks post-operation, prioritizes pain and swelling management, gentle range-of-motion restoration, and fundamental muscle activation.
